Notes & Reviews:

At first glance, the title of Shostakovich’s opera seems to speak for itself: Katherina, neglected and unhappy in her marriage, commits the most heinous crime just like the Shakespearian Lady Macbeth. Through combining satiric, grotesque and tragic elements in his music, though, Shostakovich succeeds in striking the balance between repulsion at Katherina’s immoral acts and sympathy for her. The choir and orchestra of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino conducted by James Conlon accompany tremendous soloists such as Jeanne-Michele Charbonnet, Vladimir Vaneev and Vsevolod Grivnov in the original language in this live recording.

”In short, this production is a mixed bag, but it is far preferable to Kusej’s assault on Shostakovich’s libretto. The razor sharp clarity of Blu-Ray picture greatly enhances the dramatic lighting contrasts on stage. The DTS 7.1 high resolution sound is critical for Shostakovich’s high powered orchestral score. Subtitles are available in Russian, English, German, Italian, French, and Spanish. There are no extras. In the final analysis, the indisputable musical values of the Amsterdam set make it preferable to this visually more palatable and appropriate production.”-Fanfare
