Notes & Reviews:
Two of today's reigning sopranos - Deborah Voigt and Natalie Dessay - embody the contrasting philosophies at the heart of this 2003 Metropolitan Opera production of 'Ariadne auf Naxos'. 'Ariadne auf Naxos' tells the story of deserted princess Ariadne, who believes in loyalty unto death, and the flirtatious comedienne Zerbinetta, who takes a more pragmatic attitude to love and to life. Deborah Voigt's performance of the noble, soaring vocal lines of Ariadne gave her a major breakthrough in 1991, when she sang the role in Boston; Ariadne subsequently became Voigt's signature role. Zerbinetta exemplifies one of the dizzy, coloratura characters which first established Natalie Dessay's reputation as a vocalist. Dessay makes Zerbinetta humane and achingly funny with her breezy confidence and comic excess.
