Notes & Reviews:
Pulse
Director Katharina Wagner, the composer's great grand-daughter, turns "Die Meistersinger von Nnrnberg" (Opus Arte Blu-ray DVD) on its head at the 2008 Bayreuth Festival. Beckmesser's creative spirit is "liberated" in Act 2 by a paint-throwing riot. Rules gone, his "prize" song in Act 3 involves uncovering a naked man on a table full of dirt. It's art gone wild, anything goes, but all is chillingly quelled by a conservative Hans Sachs. It is an intriguing concept, certainly one worth experiencing once.
