Notes & Reviews:
This performance is part of Haenchen's Mahler Cycle with the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra. The DVD also features an extract from a series of fictitious letters written by Haenchen from Mahler's perspective - these are based on authentic documents and form a series of fourteen books. He has made more than 120 recordings with his different orchestras, and is the author of many books on Wagner and Mahler. This dramatic performance is captured live on film in LPCM Stereo and DTS 5.1 surround sound.
The DVD's sound quality is most impressive, being very detailed and clear, but also warm, the way a concert hall should sound. The visual element adds to the pleasure of this performance. The hall itself is lovely and the camerawork unfussy, offering plenty of opportunities to watch members of the orchestra as well as the conductor, whose clear gesture is a pleasure to watch in itself.
