Notes & Reviews:
"Lehnhoff's new production of Elektra ends with a stroke of genius that arrives with a shock." - Financial Times With Strauss' Elektra, the Salzburg Festival delivers a striking production that the Kurier deemed the "best new opera production of 2010." Portraying the title role is Swedish soprano Irene Theorin, whose performance the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung declared "impressive in every respect." Internationally acclaimed Wagner singer Waltraud Meier also gives a spectacular, commanding stage debut as Klytämnestra. Director Nikolaus Lehnhoff uses his wealth of experience to great effect: moving about a sinister, forbidding set bathed in suggestively changing lighting, the vocalists are treated as stage actors, whose expressive gestures are captured with particular vividness and immediacy by the camera. Leading the Vienna Philharmonic, Daniele Gatti clearly emphasizes the dual conflicts at the heart of the work.
"René Pape is the thuggish Orestes, singing with dark, focused tone, and Robert Gambill makes the most of his playboy Aegisth. Daniele Gatti leads the Vienna Philharmonic with strength but not ferocity--as Strauss said, the notes on the page are loud enough. If I've given the impression that this Elektra is soft-edged in any way, I didn't mean to: it packs quite a wallop." -ClassicsToday (10/10)
The finest Salzburg opera offering we've had for a while. Singing of stunning assuredness operates inside a hellish vision of a claustrophobic nightmare. Great to watch as well as to listen to.
