Notes & Reviews:
Arthaus presents a remarkable staging of one of Bellini's operatic masterpieces. Portraying the titular heroine, Eva Mei was praised for her bel canto skill as well as the resolute yet unaffected and elegant way she dominates the stage. This 2004 performance at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is led by the superb opera conductor Daniel Oren, who has a long history with Italian opera houses. Federico Tiezzi's stage direction was considered radical at the time for breaking with conventional interpretations of La Sonnambula, while Pier Paolo Bisleri's painterly set designs and Gabriella Pescucci's costumes conjure a host of associations from the worlds of art and cinema.
