Macbeth occupies a special place in Verdi's oeuvre: it is his only opera without an amorous intrigue, as well as his first Shakespearean opera. The title role is one of the most profound and demanding roles that he ever wrote for baritone, and has repeatedly brought Italian singer Leo Nucci great success. French singer Sylvie Valayre is known for her interpretations of particularly grueling roles like Lady Macbeth. They lead a wonderful cast under the baton of Bruno Bartoletti.
