Notes & Reviews:

A historic & memorable concert performance of two monumental romantic works by the young Johannes Brahms was given by the elderly-but young at heart-pianist and Maestro Claudio Arrau in Santiago, Chile May 1984. This event marked a triumphant and emotional return to his native country after an absence of 17 years. Fellow countrymen welcomed Arrau with a warm reception. The performance was hailed 'miraculous'.

This historic performance was filmed in May 1984 when Maestro Arrau returned to play piano in Santiago, Chile, after an absence of 17 years. He was given a reception by his countrymen probably without equal. Hosted by Martin Bookspan, this second installment in a 4-part Signature Performance Series is now available world-wide.

The Classical Review
Rosen's documentary explores the reverence through glimpses into the pianist's past and his rise to international stature. With Martin Bookspan as chatty narrator, the program provides historical tidbits about the man and the music before letting Arrau do the important talking at the keyboard.
