Notes & Reviews:

Watch Gergiev pour his entire soul into Tchaikovsky's grand, exultant Fifth Symphony as part of C Major's latest release. Also included is a bonus 23 minute documentary about the orchestra. "The conductor Valery Gergiev has become one of Russia's most potent cultural symbols. [...] From the works of Mikhail Glinka to those of Shostakovich, the core of the Russian repertory is infused with a direct emotional appeal. When he conducts those scores (indeed, when he conducts anything), Gergiev is seeking a gut connection between the music and the audience." -The New York Times

Ritmo
The full bonus DVD is useful for checking the good vibes that prevails among so motley bunch of musicians and the peculiar ways of the Russian master. Abu Dhabi's concert included one of the pieces that was presented in Geneva by the hand of Solti in 1995, Overture William Tell Rossini, determined quite accurately by Gergiev. The rest of the program, one hundred percent Russian, included a reading more attuned than others that I could listen to Gergiev (even live) in the Classical Symphony of Prokofiev. Certainly not the most incisive and spirited imaginable, even the most subtle, but at least not without the necessary wit. The Fifth of Tchaikovsky benefited from a baton involved and sincere, even throwing in the trace elemental frame and prone to dramatic effect and sentimentality. The polka Tris- Following a tip, well above what is expected.

Fanfare
One thing that this documentary makes clear is the affection between Gergiev and his players. With what essentially is a pick-up orchestra, Gergiev hones an ensemble of beauty and refinement, with a powerful sonority. I concur with the audience in Abu Dhabi; this concert is a resounding success.

The World Orchestra for Peace... are heard at their best in these stunning BBC performances of the two Mahler symphonies. ... the performances are magnificent, particularly Symphony No. 5 in which brass playing is spectacular. Exciting concerts indeed!
