Notes & Reviews:
"The music is sheer physicality ... Uniko is like an ocean tide coming in." New York Times
"Kimmo Pohjonen is a performer whose blend of virtuosity and resolute experimentation is routinely likened to that of Jimi Hendrix and Laurie Anderson." Wire
"The soundscapes build to giant avalanches of strings and electronics, aided by the Finns' tricked out accordions and sampling. Then poof! We've just fallen off the cliff, floating downward in silence." NPR
UNIKO features the Grammy winning Kronos Quartet together with the Finnish Duo - accordion adventurer Kimmo Pohjonen and sampling guru Samuli Kosminen. Together with live strings and electric accordion plus effects and manipulations they create a new, multi-dimensional sound world. Commissioned by Kronos in 2003 and premiered at the Helsinki Festival in 2004, UNIKO has subsequently drawn sellout crowds in Moscow, Norway, and New York. UNIKO is highlighted by Pohjonen's electrified and MIDI-fied accordion alongside Kosminen's electronic percussion devices, which reproduce his own accordion samples and his samples of Kronos' instruments. The spectacle is as visual as is it aural, and is a must-see on DVD.
Uniko (Cmajor 707108) was written by Finnish rock star status accordionist/vocalist Kimmo Pohjonen and his colleague, electronics master Samuli Kosminen. The Kronos Quartet was introduced to Pohjonen's music while on tour in Finland, and loved how he had expanded the possibilities of the accordion. All are featured in this concert film. There are lots of shots of fingers playing but the stark stage set and lighting supports the stark rhythmic explosiveness of the music. The looping musical ideas are perfect for the film idiom. Do not be misled by Pohjonen's on-stage persona - his expertise on the accordion is solid.
