Notes & Reviews:

Andrea Chenier is now available for the first time on Blu-Ray. After the huge success of Aida, comes the spectacular new production from the Bregenz Festival 2011, staged by Keith Warner, with set design by Keith Warner. "Giordano's music is verismo of the very highest caliber and drives the high voltage plot forward with breathtaking speed," David Pountney, Artistic Director.

Fanfare
Andrea ChTnier's success depends on the abilities of the three principals to deliver the five or six arias that contain its best music. The singing here is quite good... [HTctor Sandoval's] evenly produced tone is a pleasure to hear... As Maddalena, Norma Fantini's voice has a lovely, warm spinto quality that's perfect in the first act... The best of the principals is Scott Hendricks as GTrard. He has a bright, agile baritone and better acting skills... The energetic, detailed orchestral performance led by Ulf Schirmer is a definite plus, and the choral work is very fine.

Gramophone
Hugely recommended - a fine mix of spectacle and intelligent interpretation.

Turok's Choice
Giordano's Andrea Chénier was well performed at the Bregenz Festival in 2011... Hector Sandoval (Chénier), Scott Hendricks (Carlo Gérard), Norma Fantini (Mme De Coigny) and Rosalind Plowright (La Contessa di Coigny) round out the cast. All sing wonderfully. The Vienna Symphony is conducted by Ulf Schirmer and the Festival Chorus is fine. Keith Warner's production... is steadily effective. Good video and fine sound...

MusicWeb International
The Bregenz Festival is well known for the use its lakeside productions make of gigantic sets and props - and this visually striking Andrea Chenier is no exception. The unexpected insertion of a couple of musical "interludes" by contemporary composer David Blake may jar with some viewers, but the production's attractive and enthusiastic young principals will win over many more.
