Notes & Reviews:

With mighty build-ups & monumental fortissimi, Welser-Möst & his Clevelanders have their work cut out for themselves - and they do not disappoint! Symphony No.7 is popular & easily accessible to all audiences thanks to its clear-cut architecture & rich melodies. The venue for this performance is Severance Hall. Inaugurated in 1931, it is still hailed today as one of the world's most beautiful concert halls.

the orchestral balance Welser-M÷st achieves is excellent, giving appropriate weight to the complex lines of Bruckner's argument. The Adagio climax... is radiant and in the finale the wonderful coda arrives with exactly the right inevitability, provoking a single too-soon shout of approval from an otherwise silent audience.

The conductor's affection for this symphony is apparent in his 14-minute discussion of the work. The finale is thrilling indeed. What a pleasure it is to see and hear the famed Cleveland brass at their very best. I saw this on the Blu Ray version which offers stunning vidoagraphy William Cosel, vividly conveying the golden beauty of the venue which rightfully has been called one of the most beautiful concert halls in the world. Robert Woods of Telarc fame was executive audio producer, a guarantee of sonic excellence. This is a magnificent issue. Don't miss it!
