Zadek's production of Aufstieg Und Fall Der Stadt Mahagonny, which combines Brecht's text with Weill's music, was recorded at the '98 Salzburg festival. The Opera was one of the greatest successes of its day when it originally opened in '31, and ran for over 50 performances. Its songs, most of all O moon of Alabama, are still great hits today. In the '98 Salzburg production they were interpreted by a top notch ensemble of singers under the direction of Davies. "The richness of Weill's score, with its allusions to Beethoven's Fidelio, is brought out under Dennis Russell Davies's baton, and they are beautifully sung performances from Jerry Hadley and Catherine Malfi tano." - The Guardian.
