>Fall, Leo : Paroli, opera
Conductor Ensemble Composer

Notes & Reviews:

With Paroli (originally entitled Frau Denise), a variation on the Figaro theme of the amorous misadventures of a duped, married nobleman set near Paris during the late 18th c., Leo Fall (1873-1925) succeeded in producing a captivating one-act chamber play that was neither operetta nor opera – even though it does have its share of reminiscences of fairy-tale operas, stylistic quotations of the rococo, discreet leitmotivic technique, and polished ensemble pieces. A prodigious operetta composer, Leo Fall was considered a true rival to Franz Lehár at the turn of the 20th c.

American Record Guide, March/April 2016
Paroli is Leo Fall's first operetta. Originally titled Frau Denise, it premiered in 1902 as the middle opera of a triptych of dissimilar oneact operas and operettas, the others composed by Georges Courtline and Pierre Veber. Fall restructured and retitled the operetta Paroli, and it was published in 1903. Modern performances outside of German speaking countries are rare.

Fall's music is very enjoyable in both the comic and romantic songs and deserves greater exposure. He does the rococo style well and demonstrates in this early effort his style, which would later improve in full-length works like Madame Pompadour. It is enjoyable. The performers are expert, and the sound is excellent.
