Notes & Reviews:

Native from Kosovo, Flaka Goranci can look back on an extensive career on the international opera stage. Besides her proficiency in the leading parts of operas by Mozart, Rossini or Weill, she also succeeds to amaze in the genre of folk music, as can be heard with her new album “Albanian Flowers”. Supported by her collegues with Balkan descent Adela Frasineanu, violin, Edison Pashko, violoncello and Mennan Berveniku, piano, Flaka Goranci presents songs from Albania and the Kosovo. Love’s bliss and love’s sorrow always go side by side and the appropriate roundelay of symbols mostly includes spring and flowers, like lilies, roses and snowdrops. Further typical elements out of peoples’ daily life that can be found in this music, are weddings, loyalty to one’s homeland and shepherd tunes. With kind support of the Ministry of Diaspora in Kosovo.

American Record Guide, March/April 2016
The best thing is simply to listen to this music. The texts are about love, homesickness, separation, and longing to regain what has been lost. The program of 11 songs includes traditional folk songs and works more recently composed. You can hear the musical heritage of the Ottoman Empire in this music. Some songs have a gypsy quality and others include rhythmic plucking, slapping of strings, overtone playing, and coloristic touches that may be ancient but sound very modern.

Goranci has a dark and Slavic sound and does an effective job of conveying the plaintive quality of this music. She is particularly good is expressing the lamentation of the unaccompanied song 'Give Me that Smile' with its words "Nothing has been left for me. Love and happiness have disappeared for me." The accompanying musicians employ a wide range of techniques. These performances are terrific.
