Notes & Reviews:

Renowned Japanese American violinist Midori follows up her Onyx Classics début with a recording of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin. These works have long been considered the Mount Everest of violin repertoire. Each one is a test of dexterity and emotional commitment. On this new recording, Midori returns to these challenging works giving us readings that reach a new plateau of performance and insight.

BBC Music Magazine, February 2016
The Japanese violinist Midori offers a conservative performance avoiding anything which would be construed as controversial. Her tempos are moderate, her vibrato well controlled and her intonation secure... the D minor Partita, with its great Chaconne, and the C major Sonata stand out for the lightly articulated and playful character of their dance movements.

Gramophone Magazine, February 2016
Thomas Sanderling's unhurried, solicitous conducting pays handsome long-term dividends ... The recording finds an effective balance between voices and instruments, and moments of stage-shifting noise and the occasional audible prompt are only minimally distracting.

American Record Guide, May/June 2016
Midori is the most famous name here, and she does have an individual approach to this music. She always sounds cool, and so she does here. When my brothers and I were growing up, we had a recording by organist Virgil Fox, titled Bach Live at Fillmore East. Fox tells the audience that "Bach and Shakespeare felt everything." Whatever you think of Virgil Fox, I think you would have to agree with his statement.
