Notes & Reviews:

The myth of the modern tenor was born at an 1837 Paris performance of Rossini's William Tell when Gilbert Duprez first sang a top C in the chest register. The hitherto unknown expressive power provoked a massive audience reaction, and the tenor voice soon became a trademark of the young, valiant hero. Yinjia Gong grew up in Guizhou province, China, developing an interest in music early on. While studying Chinese traditional music he became fascinated with Western opera. In 2008 his admiration for Jussi Björling and Nicolai Gedda took him to Sweden. There Gong's impressive top register soon attracted attention, and in 2011 he was invited to perform at a gala concert at the Royal Swedish Opera, commemorating the centennial of Björling's birth. Gong was given the honor of performing Puccini's Nessun dorma - one of Björling's 'greatest hits'. Naturally, Nessun dorma is also part of the program on Gong's début recording, along with a series of other jewels of the tenor repertoire.

Reviews

A work in progress...
Yinjia Gong had only been singing professionally for about a year when he laid down the first tracks for this album, which includes many of the calling card arias for the tenor voice. The result does him credit, even if its not the work of a finished artist. He can churn out the decibels, but seems for the most part to treat soft singing as an effect rather than an alternative to full-out vocalizing; still, its a treat to hear the composers dynamic marking observed for a change at the end of Celeste Aida and the Carmen Flower Song. Theres not much personality on display, though; the only time he seems to be having any fun is when hes tossing off the umpteen high Cs in the Daughter aria. Perhaps he ought not to try so hard to show his versatility, and leave the heavier music for a little later in his career. Hell be worth watching in the meanwhile. I suppose we cant complain if a CD vocal recital is filled out with some instrumental movementshowever, we do have a right to feel that said instruments (particularly the flute solo gasping its way through the Carmen prelude) are not sight-reading the music! Texts and translations; first-rate sound.
