Album Notes

This themed collection from the folks at Now Music features 18 prime cuts of 1980s new wave. In the decades that followed, bands like the Psychedelic Furs, the B-52s, and, Echo & the Bunnymen would have been labeled alternative or indie rock, but when they first arrived in the latter days of the punk movement, they were blazing new trails. The new wave movement that led into the '80s encompassed many styles of bands, from the all-female rock of the Go-Go's to the synth pop of the Thompson Twins to the new romanticism of Adam Ant. It was broadly defined and highly creative, and remains one of the defining sounds of that decade. While it would be tough to define new wave through a single disc, Now That's What I Call New Wave 80s does manage to hit on major players like R.E.M., the Cure, the Human League, and Tears for Fears. ~ Timothy Monger
