Album Notes

Audio Mixer: Chris Fogel.

Liner Note Author: Maya Forbes.

The 2015 theatrical film Infinitely Polar Bear, about a father (Mark Ruffalo) trying to keep his family together while he struggles to manage his bipolar disorder, features a soundtrack that draws on varied pre-'80s singer/songwriters alongside a couple of contemporary ones -- notably director Maya Forbes' sister China Forbes (Pink Martini), who offers up the ukulele indie pop tune "The Northern Line." The soundtrack also incorporates a folky original score by Theodore Shapiro (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Dinner for Schmucks), whose instrumental pieces make up four of the album's 14 tracks. The selection of vintage songs is charming and poignant, representing quality but not ubiquity, such as George Harrison's "Run of the Mill" off of All Things Music Pass, "Your Long Journey" by Doc and Rosa Lee Watson, and the pleading "Your Man" by soulster Swamp Dogg. A coeval representative is 2009's earthy polka "Doomsday" by Elvis Perkins in Dearland. Unlikely to make waves on the singles charts, but befitting the tender tone of the film with its wide period reach, Infinitely Polar Bear will doubtlessly appeal more to devotees of the film and serious soundtrack collectors than to particular-style-seeking music fans. ~ Marcy Donelson
