Notes & Reviews:

Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony join forces with America's most-performed living composer John Adams for an album featuring two works written for the San Francisco Symphony. In the world première recording of Absolute Jest, we hear Adams's inspired and witty take on Beethoven's spirited scherzos and in Grand Pianola Music, led here by John Adams, we revel in tongue-in-cheek allusions to Beethoven's Emperor Concerto. Both works speak to the deeply personal and vital relationship of some of the top musicians of our time.

American Record Guide, November/December 2015
The San Francisco Symphony, like so many artists, has established its own label. This program couples two works by Adams, one old and one new. The 2012 Absolute Jest, in Adams's words, "is a colossal 25-minute scherzo where I take fragments of Beethoven's music and subject them to my own peculiar developmental techniques". The new work is much more engaging than many of Adams's recent works in that it embraces more tonal-sounding materials, making the cerebral and expressive aspects of Adams's compositional mind more balanced.

Adams leads the performance of his masterly Grand Pianola Music, and the results are much more satisfying than his previous recording of the work on Nonesuch (Mar/Apr 1995) - indeed, Part I, which starts faster than I've ever heard it before, includes a greater and more expressive variety of tempo than I know in many performances of contemporary music. The soloists - Hamelin, Shaham, and Synergy Vocals - offer up the most virtuoso music making for this work I have ever heard.
