The Cadillacs: The Fabulous Cadillacs

Album Notes

The Cadillacs' first album was actually like a greatest-hits compilation (leaving aside the fact that they'd had only one hit) drawing from the singles they'd released up to that point, and not material recorded specifically for LP release. That hit, "Speedoo," is included here, naturally, as are 11 other tracks found on various A-sides and B-sides of 1954-1957 7" releases. Since more than half of this is included on Rhino's The Best of the Cadillacs, the album's appeal is likely limited to major doo wop collectors. Heard on its own, though, it impresses as an above-average early rock & roll LP, even if for the average listener "Speedoo" is always going to dwarf anything else the group did. "Zoom" is certainly a fun if prototypical uptempo early doo wop stomp, and "Down the Road," "No Chance," and "Sugar Sugar" aren't far behind in that regard. Such fun if somewhat formulaic fast tunes were their definite strong point, though "Wishing Well" demonstrates they had a respectable way with a ballad. The production throughout has that flashpoint of R&B, a hint of jazz, and a trace of pop that defined much early New York vocal group rock & roll. ~ Richie Unterberger
