Notes & Reviews:
Giacomo Puccini's opera Tosca premiered in 1900 in Rome, but only after its performance at La Scala under Arturo Toscanini did the work become truly triumph, becoming ever-present on the world's opera stages and a record catalog staple with innumerable recordings. This recording, realized by the USSR Bolshoi Theatre in 1974, features celebrated, internationally recognized soloists of the opera company of the 1970s: Tamara Milashkina, Vladimir Atlantov, Yuri Mazurok and others. It is sung in its original Italian and led by the company's prominent and noted conductor Mark Ermler.

Milashkina's Slavic vowels won't suit everyone, but she and Atlantov make an ardent pair, with Mazurok a snarling Scarpia in this characterful production.
