Notes & Reviews:

This new release brings together forces from all points on the musical spectrum to solve some of the world's most pressing problems.

1. How de we keep classical music alive in the next generation?

2. How do we calm our kids down and get them to focus (or better, to sleep!).

Marc Neikrug, an internationally known pianist, has long studied and pursued his passion to understand the effects of music on the brain. Almost a decade ago he met producer Phil Ramone, and together they worked on a project to create an album that sought an answer to introducing classical music to children. Instead of working form a scholarly perspective, they simply sought to find music that could have the best possible impact on their minds. Relying as much on their own gut instincts, as well as musicological information, they recorded nearly 100 works. Violinist Pinchas Zukerman, Neikrug's longtime musical partner, joined the project, providing a second CD of works for violin and piano. Using unofficial focus groups (Neikrug's wife is an elementary school teacher), the works were narrowed down to this album - Classics for Kids. The selections go far afield from the ususal suspects that make most introductory CDs boring and repetitive. This collection combines some familiar (Schumann's Scenes of Childhood, Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1), with some works rarely recorded ever, not simply for children's classical CDs. Elgar's Six Easy Pieces, Franz Xavier Mozart's violin sonata and Edward MacDowell's works for solo piano, even the title work, Debussy's evocative "Sunken Cathedral" are choices miles from "Baby Mozart". This album sets out to prove that children at a young age (scientists say before 11 years old) accept music freely, and this collection will amuse, fascinate and delight anyone with ears, and prove a valuable stepping stone for a musical lifetime, whether a child grows up listening to Stravinsky or Taylor Swift.
