Notes & Reviews:

A rapid transformation in musical tastes occurred in the years around 1500, thanks to the relatively widespread distribution of part-music in the new medium of print. It was in this context that the consort of viols emerged. For their third recording on Delphian, the Rose Consort of Viols use a set of instruments modeled on those depicted in an Italian altarpiece dating from 1497 in Bologna. Peerless early-music mezzo Clare Wilkinson joins the consort in a sophisticated interweaving of voices that casts revealing light on the earliest music for this innovative combination of instruments.

Rose Consort of Viols' recent engagements have included performances at the BBC Proms Matinees at Cadogan Hall with vocal ensemble Tenebrae, at the National Gallery in London and for Semana de Musica Religiosa in Cuenca, Spain. The Consort has received awards for its research and performance of newly devised programmes, and has made a number of highly acclaimed recordings for Delphian and other labels, including most recently An Emerald in a Work of Gold: Music from the Dow Partbooks (Delphian DCD34115), a disc of music by Byrd and his contemporaries in collaboration with The Marian Consort, and Serenissima (DCD34149), a programme of music from Renaissance Europe performed on instruments by Richard Jones copied from the earliest surviving viol, a Venetian instrument by Francesco Linarol from c.1540.

American Record Guide, January/February 2015
There's a beautiful wistfulness and earnest sincerity, as well as a rich sweet-and-sour timbre, to the sound of a consort of viols. I've always liked the sound, with its tactile edge, like the texture of a firm tweed cloth. It's quite smooth to the touch in one direction, with a rougher feel to the cross-grain. The hardy, warm, and prickly character always reminds me of the wool from Herdwick sheep in the north of England. Be sure to have your playback volume high enough to hear all these elements. Bios, detailed notes about the music, and notes from the maker of the viols.

American Record Guide, March/April 2016
On this recording the Rose Consort uses a set of viols model on ones depicted in an Italian altarpiece dated 1497 from Bologna. The polyphony is always very clearly articulated, and the sound of these instruments contrasts nicely with Wilkinson's voice.

There are some "hit" tunes, such as Josquin's 'In te Domine speravi', Juan del Encina's 'Triste Espaa', and Henry VIII's 'Helas madame', along with some of the more intricate instrumental music of the renaissance, including an anonymous setting of the dancetune, 'La Spagne' and Alexander Agricola's 'Cecus non iudicat de coloribus' (A blind man can not judge of colors). The booklet includes very informative notes, complete texts and translations, both adding to the quality of this release.
