Notes & Reviews:

This exclusive LPO release charts the development of the 'Hollywood sound' over two decades of epic filmmaking from the 1960s to the 1980s. Featuring the iconic music from such classics as Cleopatra, Psycho and The Godfather, this release offers a unique opportunity to hear some of the 20th century's most dramatic music, recorded in a live concert setting. Distinguished American conductor John Mauceri arranged and edited most of this music for concert performance, using his experience and expertise to create a truly coherent set of pieces which work as well in the concert hall as they do on screen. A number of the arrangements on this release are appearing on disc for the first time, having received their London premieres at the live performance captured here, including Mauceri's arrangements of music from The Godfather and Psycho, which he himself conducted. In particular this is the first ever release of the Cleopatra film music. These recordings were taken from a live concert performance at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall in November 2013 as part of the Southbank Centre's The Rest Is Noise festival, based on Alex Ross's book The Rest Is Noise.

Mr. Christian Meets Captain Kirk
Providing the music scores for films has always loomed large throughout the illustrious history of the LPO. Like the other great orchestras based in London, i.e., the LSO, Philharmonia and RPO, the LPO has been engaged in this activity for decades. In fact, the LPO’s very first venture can be traced back to the 1930s. With this new release, the LPO joins forces with another film music veteran, conductor and musicologist, John Mauceri. On first glance, this 2 disc set appears to be a fairly standard program one may encounter at a pops concert devoted to “movie music”. Nothing could be further from an accurate description of just what has been achieved here. Maestro Mauceri has very effectively assembled cohesive extended suites from Cleopatra (North), The Godfather (Rota), Psycho (Herrmann) and Mutiny on the Bounty (Kaper). This last item is a real treat. Kaper’s score for the 1962 version of this film is magnificent yet sadly under appreciated. Rounding out what must have been a very successful concert are selections by Newman, Waxman, Goldsmith, Morricone and Jarre. Maestro Mauceri conducts with authority and an abiding respect for this material. The LPO responds in kind with a reserve of fervor and nuance. The sound pickup is excellent. The densely orchestrated Kaper emerges with particular clarity and impact. What sound like the original Tahitian vocal tracks are seamlessly incorporated into the mix. Maestro Mauceri’s accompanying essay is mandatory reading for anyone who values this repertoire.
