Carl Loewe, born in 1796 and celebrated in his time as a composer of songs, was sometimes known as the 'North German Schubert'. Setting poems by Goethe, Fontane, Herder and others, these ballads are performed by one of the most charismatic and imaginative lieder singers of recent decades, bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff.
