The Album Leaf: Jimmy LaValle (various instruments); Christopher Sprague, Jason Soares, Rafter Roberts (programming).
When he's not performing with San Diego-based post-rock outfit Tristeza, guitarist Jimmy LaValle devotes his time to solo recordings released under the name the Album Leaf. LaValle's sophomore release, ONE DAY I'LL BE ON TIME, follows in the footsteps of his debut, AN ORCHESTRATED RISE TO FALL, offering up minimal, meditative instrumentals that seem to stretch out over space and time. Simple patterns couched in an atmospheric wash are stated and evolved through repetition on piano, bass, drums, and, most centrally, LaValle's guitar.
LaValle's work is impressionistic and often cinematic. His spare, thoughtful music bears a kinship to the avant folk of John Fahey and the early ambient work of Brian Eno. On the basis of these comparisons alone, ONE DAY I'LL BE ON TIME is worth a listen, and will be of particular interest to fans of spare, hypnotic instrumental music.
