Notes & Reviews:

While Miklos Rozsa made his fame as a composer of film scores for many of the most successful epics of the mid-twenteth century (Thief of Baghdad, Ben-Hur, and El Cid, among many others), he composed concert works throughout his life, though his output in these two genres remained quite distinct. He once remarked that while his film music and concert works were completely different, he hoped that it would be obvious that they were the offspring of the same father.

Gramophone
Composed for Janos Starker, it is not hard to see the appeal. Unlike many film composers, Rozsa understood that writing in abstract demanded a different approach, not least in placing his melodic genius at the service of the musical argument. Expertly balanced between soloist and orchestra, the Hungarian flavour hints at what a late Bartok cello concerto might have sounded like... Raphael Wallfisch clearly has an affinity with these splendid works and the BBC Concert Orchestra are in great form. Graffin partners Wallfisch adroitly. Warmly recommended.
