Notes & Reviews:

The years following 1875 were a prodigious and career defining period for Antonin Dvorak. In that year he received a sizeable artist's grant from the Austrian State, and devoted himself completely to writing. He would pen numerous significant works during this time, including his Fifth Symphony, Serenade for Strings, and most famously his first suite of Slavonic Dances. The String Sextet, one of his finest accomplishments for chamber ensemble, is written in a style closely related to the Slavonic Dances, incorporating folk elements in the middle movements; similarly, he dedicated his second String Quintet "To my Nation." The Quintet originally consisted of five movements but was later edited to four, with the omitted Intermezzo becoming a standalone work.
