Notes & Reviews:

A budget issue of one of Willard White's most successful recordings! Repertoire includes: Five Old American Songs (Copland); Ol' Man River; Some Enchanted Evening; I Got Plenty o' Nuttin' (Porgy and Bess); Pearl Fishers' Duet; the `Champagne Aria` (Don Giovanni); Mephistopheles' Serenade (Faust); and the three Negro spirituals Go Down Moses, Deep River, and Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel.

Born to a poor family in Kingston Jamaica, Willard White practiced folk singing and opera as an amateur and trained at the Jamaican School of Music before being "discovered" by the wife of eminent conductor Sir John Barbirolli. He then travelled to New York and he won a scholarship to Julliard, where he would study under Giorgio Tozzi and Maria Callas. His international fame was first made with his seminal performance as Porgy in the definitive recording of `Porgy and Bess` in 1976, and over the past four decades has sung at the Royal Opera, the Met, Opera Bastille, and many of the major opera houses worldwide.

James Murray
As one of the world's leading bass baritones Willard White is in constant demand. Although gifted with a wonderful sense of humour, he is also known for his portrayal of unsympathetic characters such as Nick Shadow, Mephistopheles, etc. His dignified stage presence also enables him to be particularly effective in larger-than-life roles such as Wotan, Sarastro and Godunov. However the role for which he has achieved the greatest plaudits and one that he has made entirely his own is Porgy, so memorably portrayed at Glyndebourne and since.
