Notes & Reviews:

A budget two-disc pairing of Beethoven's Middle Quartets which has received superb reviews from the Penguin Guide and Gramophone. The three Razumovsky quartets, penned in 1806 at the commission of a Russian ambassador in Vienna, have a characteristically Russian flavor in honor of their patron. These works are a strong departure from the established quartet genre, but are regarded as excellent in their conception and execution as they are challenging. The `Harp` Quartet, so named by Beethoven's publisher for its pizzicato and arpeggio sections, is less heroic and outgoing than its immediate predecessors, more immediately accessible and in the slow movement and the variations finale, lyrical.

Gramophone
(The Razumovsky Quartets) open like a relaxed invitation, (their nourishing perceptions are worth anyone's time.

Penguin Guide
Extra sharpness of characterization as well as the extra warmth.` (Harp) `Fun is brought out in the first movement... The adagio treated songfully.
