Notes & Reviews:

Ondine's successful Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) recordings with the NDR Sinfonieorchester and Christoph Eschenbach continue with this release featuring two major symphonic works, 'Mathis der Maler' and Symphonie in Es. The 'Mathis der Maler' Symphony, premiered to great success by the BPO under Wilhelm Furtwngler in 1934, is based on an opera that treats the life of the Renaissance painter Mathias Grunewald. Hindemith wrote the Symphonie in Es during his exile in the US in 1940. The Symphony is absolute music in the tradition of the four-movement symphony of Beethoven and the romantics.

BBC Music Magazine, February 2016
Eschenbach and the NDR Symphony Orchestra give a fine performance, in quite spacious tempos... [and] the recorded sound is good - you wouldn't know it is 'live'.
