Notes & Reviews:

The Bulgarian-born mezzo-soprano Vesselina Kasarova fairly quickly became a crowd favorite early in her professional career at the Zurich Opera House, reaching international stardom soon after with her Salzburg Festival debut in 1991. During the subsequent quarter-century, she has been heard on the great stages of the world's finest opera houses, singing a range of roles in operas by Mozart, Rossini, Massenet, Berlioz, Donizetti, Verdi, and more. A past ECHO Klassik award recipient, her recordings, including several for the RCA Victor Red Seal label, have been critically-acclaimed and popular with opera fans and admirers of Ms. Kasarova. For Genuin, she has recorded a new album of Russian Arias with the conductor Pavel Baleff and the Philharmonie Baden-Baden. Its repertoire is one of discovery, or re-discovery, with names such as Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Mussorgsky, Glinka and Rimsky-Korsakov denoting the high quality of the music to be heard sung by this world-class singer.

Gorgeous collection of arias from Ms. Kasarova
This CD from the Genuin label features Mezzo-Soprano Vesselina Kasarova performing 12 arias from Russian composers, accompanied by the Philharmonie Baden-Baden under the baton of Pavel Baleff. Several pieces from Mussorgsky, Rimski-Korsakov, and Tchaikovsky are featured, as well as works from Dargomyzhsky, Glinka, and Borodin. Ms. Kasarova’s vocal range is indeed well suited to the repertoire chosen, and it is clear right away that these are works that are important to her to give her best on.

The opening work, “Maria’s Song” from Mussorgsky’s “Khovanshchina”, is a marvelous way to open this recording, its somber notes providing a warm base for Ms. Kasarova to work from. “Laura’s First Song” from Dargomyzhsky’s “The Stone Guest” is a cheerful delight, and “Olga’s Aria” from Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” is also particularly pleasing. Rimski-Korsakov’s “Monologue of Lyubasha” from “The Tsar’s Bride”, sung for the most part without orchestral accompaniment, is just drop-dead gorgeous, as Ms. Kasarova’s voice reaches and soars, creating an emotional texture of fear and deep pain – and I envy the recording engineer that got to experience it in person. It was worth the price of the CD just for this track. I must also point out the outstanding and subtle orchestral work on “Vanya’s Aria” from Glinka’s “Ivan Susanin – A Life For the Tsar”, as the little tugs and pulls (particularly from the strings) definitely made this listener pay even more rapt attention to the piece. “Konchakovna’s Cavatina” from Borodin’s “Prince Igor” was also quite well done, with Ms. Kasarova and the orchestra forming an exquisite partnership, each seemingly feeding off of the other to provide an emotional experience for the listener. The recording concludes with the energetic instrumental “Dance of the Skomorokhi” from Romski-Korsakov’s “The Snow Maiden”.
The liner notes are well written, and give background on Ms. Kasarova, Mr. Baleff, and the Philharmonie Baden-Baden, as well as English translations of the arias performed on the recording. This is a wonderful collection of works that are brought to life, and I find myself paritcularly pleased that I have this in my collection.
