Notes & Reviews:

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of Brahms and Prokofiev concertos performed by Natalia Gutman and Oleg Kagan. One of the world's best cellists, a People's Artist of the USSR, and an owner of the State Prize of Russia, Natalia Gutman received four competition prizes when she was a student. In the third round of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competiion, she made a brilliant appearance with Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony-Concerto, the great composer's last work which was yet to be estimated by its true worth. Natalia Gutman's brightest artistic alliance was with her husband and remarkable violinist Oleg Kagan. A pupil of David Oistrakh, numerouse prize winner, Oleg Kagan was famous as a soloist and ensemble performer, and fine interpreter of classical and contemporary music. His death interrupted his active performing career in the prime of his life. The album features Oleg Kagan and Natalia Gutman playing Johannes Brahms's double concerto, the German master's last orchestral piece. The soloists are accompanied by the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Evgeny Svetlanov and Alexander Lazarev.

American Record Guide, March/April 2016
These are performances from 1981 and quite remarkable ones. The program starts with Gutman playing Prokofieff's detailed revision of his 1938 Cello Concerto. It is basically most impressive in the rapid passages, which she plays with amazing flair and accuracy.

This program works very well. It is also lovely to hear these two string players working together, both expressing all they can. The orchestra plays with vigor and sensitivity in both performances. The recording is well balanced. Altogether, this is a fine program; and the audience is only evident when applauding.
