A look at the track list makes clear, even if the graphics don't, that this is not a new release of music by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins (a member, once upon a time, of the rock band Soft Machine), but essentially a greatest-hits album. As such, it fulfills its task quite well. Not everyone is a fan of Jenkins' broad crossover style, but he has arguably fused pop influences with Baroque and even Renaissance elements in a way that no one else has, and has been rewarded with a knighthood for his efforts. The latter appears in Jenkins' mass The Armed Man, suggested by the Renaissance tradition of masses on a tune called L'homme armé; this is doubtless one of Jenkins' most ingenious pieces, and it's generously excerpted here. You also get other Jenkins successes, notably Adiemus, which started with percussion-laden orchestral music where Vangelis left off and spawned a whole series of internationally successful albums. There are representations of other parts of Jenkins' musical personality, including the Welsh (Bryn Terfel stops in for one number). A pair of more recent recordings features the New Zealand soprano Hayley Westenra, who is a perfect match for Jenkins' style. The recordings range in date of origin from 1995 (Adiemus) to 2010, and Warner Classics' remastering effectively smooths over the differences among the various sound sources. If you're looking for a taste of Jenkins, this can be recommended, although The Armed Man (2001) remains perhaps his most substantial work.
