Notes & Reviews:

Writing in an idiom characterized by its immediate accessibility, Boyd Prof. of Composition at LSU Dinos a, recipient of many grants, commissions and awards, has had his music performed throughout the world, with his orchestral music in particular receiving rave reviews. This latest Centaur release of music by Mr. Constantinides once again puts the focus on orchestral work, with particular emphasis on productions featuring spotlighted soloists in concerted forms. All but one of the works also features the composer in the role of conductor, making these recordings de facto definitive.

American Record Guide, March/April 2016
Four concertos by Louisiana State University professor Dinos Constantinides, two of them for violin. This is Volume 3 of the composer's complete works for soloists and orchestra. Constantides apparently has a catalog of more than 260 works, with 65 CDs to his credit. Believe it or not, I haven't heard any, so this is my first exposure. His music is unabashedly romantic, with Greek modal inflections to go along with normal romantic gestures. All of this music sounds the same. Everything is competent enough. All is securely tonal.

The remaining works are for other instruments. Transformations is a conglomeration of three clarinet pieces written from 1990 to 1993, arranged with chamber orchestra.

Reverie is a little piece for trombone and strings with blues tinges - certainly not a natural part of his style. All told, Mr Constantinides is a hard-working academic with a good heart and solid technique, writing music that will ruffle no feathers and challenge no one.
