Notes & Reviews:

Introductions describes the event and the music performed. First, to introduce Florida Gulf Coast University and the Instrumental program developed over the past seven years in the Bower School of Music. The program reflects music that introduces style (Adams), solo instruments (Creston), and unique scoring (Rogers, Whitacre and Strauss). New works are introduced such as Mackey's [Redacted]. It is our privilege to perform and share our music. The Wind Orchestra is comprised of the finest wind and percussion students at Florida Gulf Coast University and is guided by a philosophy grounded in the study and performance of the highest quality music composed for wind band. Students are exposed to a wide variety of compositional techniques, rehearsal processes and expressive possibilities that challenge each ensemble member to develop their expressive musicianship. Formed in 2007, the Wind Orchestra's rapid development reflects that of the Bower School of Music and the University having already performed World Premieres and Commissioned works. With the strong support of the studio faculty, the ensemble offers the students the perfect blend of artist and teacher.

American Record Guide, March/April 2016
The FGCU Wind Orchestra has remarkable. Like most music majors at a small state school, the FGCU students are still working on timbre, intonation, rhythm, and technical execution; and while some sections have a decent uniform sound, more refinement is required.

The ensemble is most comfortable in customary band scores and transcriptions, notably the Hanson, the Maki, the Reed, and the Strauss - here the students usually transcend their current capabilities and deliver effective performances. In this vein, some of the programming could use more care and thought; while students deserve a challenge, they also need literature that allows for meaningful achievement.

The FGCU faculty soloists are uneven as well. Bernardo boasts excellent fingers. Darnell sings with nice clarity and nuance.
