Notes & Reviews:

Having previously recorded the Baroque greats such as Handel and Vivaldi, Pamela completes her anthology of eighteenth century favourites with Telemann's Recorder Sonatas and Fantasias. Telemann's legacy as a composer of recorder music is among the richest of the age. The warmth and conviviality of Telemann's writing, the easy beauty of his melodies, as well as the knowing playfulness and ingenuity across many national styles are fully explored in this engaging programme. Pamela utilises a range of recorders in many sizes, known to players in the eighteenth century but only recently again perfected by makers for modern use. Accompanying Pamela are Ensemble Marsyas' Peter Whelan (bassoon), Alison McGillivray (cello), Elizabeth Kenny (archlute/guitar) and Marcin Swiatkiewicz (harpsichord/organ). Telemann's virtuosic 'concerto style' writing provides many opportunities for Pamela to further cement her deserved reputation as 'queen of the recorder'. Pamela Thorby has an international reputation as the UK's most stylish and creative recorder virtuoso. Pamela is most regularly heard on Karl Jenkins' fabulous Adiemus recordings making her possibly one of the most listened to recorder players in the world. Pamela's ability to assimilate many genres of music and her love of improvisation has led to collaborations with leading jazz, folk and pop musicians in an influential career in which she has travelled the world as concerto soloist, chamber musician and orchestral principal. Pamela's numerous and diverse recordings include acclaimed chamber music albums with the much admired Palladian Ensemble and a continuing series of highly praised solo recordings for Linn.

Gramophone Magazine, September 2015
Gilchrist sets the mood from the start, entering the world of the Op. 24 Liederkreis with a soft touch and confiding tone... in the Op. 39 Liederkreis Gilchrist's light tenor is good at painting the moonlit night of 'Mondnacht' and the more ominous twilight of 'Zwielight'... his Dichterliebe is the cycle of a kindly poet, who... shapes phrases that gently unfurl in the light of a summer morning. In all this he is well supported by the clean-cut, carefully detailed playing of Tilbrook, who modestly leaves any point-making to the singer.

BBC Music Magazine, December 2015
[Gilchrist and Tilbrook] allow each cycle to unfold naturally, minutely adjusting the spaces between certain songs to allow the ear to absorb what it has just heard... Tilbrook's navigation of the playouts, those final bars in which it seems that Schumann is communicating something too profound for mere words, is unfailingly lovely, her accompaniments clearly articulated and self-effacing... [Gilchrist] is fearlessly expressive.

American Record Guide, March/April 2016
The program includes recorder sonatas from Telemann's Essercizii Musici, and Getreue Music-Meister, a music periodical edited by Telemann, where music was published in serial form over several issues. Each sonata is between three and four movements long, exhibiting virtuosic passage work and counterpoint in the fast movements and lyrical writing in slow movements. Some have programmatic titles that evoke feeling. For example, the first movement of the F-minor Sonata, marked 'Triste', uses chromaticism to evokes feelings of despair. The C-major sonata begins with a songlike movement titled 'Cantabile'. Disc 2 includes the unaccompanied 12 Fantasias a Travers, Sans Basse. Steven Zohn notes that it was common practice, in the 18th century, for recorder players to transpose flute pieces. Hence, all but one (no. 11) of the 12 Fantasias is performed in keys better suited to the recorder. To accomplish the task, Pamela Thorby uses variously pitched alto recorders and voice flutes pitched in D and E-flat.

The performances are excellent overall - tastefully phrased and lightly ornamented to bring out the genius of Telemann's writing.
