Notes & Reviews:

Baroque Bass Cantatas from Mu¨geln Archive offers a representative sampling of cantatas for bass voice from St. John's Kantorei Archive, established in Mu¨geln (Saxony) in 1571. The cantatas presented here are from the first half of the 18th c. and were copied during the tenure of the music director Daniel Jacob Springsguth. All the composers were from the Saxony and Thuringia regions. The CD, featuring bass baritone Klaus Mertens and the Accademia Daniel under conductor Shalev Ad-El, demonstrates that even minor masters operating in the countryside could compose on a very high level.

American Record Guide, March/April 2016
This is Klaus Mertens's second recording of Baroque Bass Cantatas with the Accademia Daniel (CPO 777 298; 2010), and Mertens's voice is as rich, just as full of subtlety and vigor as ever. Liebhold's Des Menschen Sohn is Kommen and Telemann's Der Herr ist König are particularly striking for their vocal display passages. In the aria 'Also Können Fromme Seelen, Liebhold pairs passage work in the voice with obbligato violin. Every movement of Telemann's cantata is replete with fioratura. The aria 'Von dem an Stehet dein Stuhl Feste' has Mertens all over his range, singing in a style reminiscent of Venetian divisions. The following aria, 'Die Wasserwogen im Meer Sind Gross', is also nimble. Texts and notes are in English.
