American Record Guide, May/June 2016
James Winn (b. 1952) is a Nevada resident, teaching piano and composition at the University of Nevada and active in several chamber groups. This program of his chamber musica ppears to be his first entry into ARG, possibly his first CD as a composer. The 8-minute Variations on a Theme of Bartok is for cello & piano, written in 1977 and revised in 2010. It is based on a Hungarian folk song, 'Kis Kece Lanyom', as set by Bartok in his piano series For Children (Volume 1). Masque is for oboe, cello, and piano, a three-movement suite from 1981 lasting 14 minutes. Three Nocturnes is for piano trio and is the longest work here, lasting 25 minutes.

Winn's musical style is based on tonal romantic music. There are modern and popular elements in it. The musicians play it with sentiment, and I found it enjoyable and well recorded. If you're ready for the present looking at the past, give it a try.
