Notes & Reviews:

For their new release, Concerto Köln takes us to England and to the composer Charles Avison's milestone arrangements of Domenico Scarlatti's harpsichord sonatas and a marker in British music history. While Avison is hardly mentioned in the Classical canon, the rise of historic period performance practice has drawn attention to his works. Multiply talented, he was known more in his lifetime as an ascerbic critic regularly assailing his popular colleagues of the day including Vivaldi and Handel. Scarlatti was among the composers Avison meted out praise for and his Concertos, inspired by his respect for Scarlatti, are here performed by one of the leading ensembles in the field of historical performance practice. Concerto Köln's passionate and scholarly approach forms the foundation of a gorgeous realizing of these works.

American Record Guide, May/June 2016
In 1744, when Avison published 12 Concertos in Seven Parts arranged from Harpsichord Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti, he was 35 years old and Scarlatti was 59. Italian music was extremely popular in England, and Avison knew just how to re-shape the pyrotechnics of Scarlatti's published Essercizii by leavening them with slow movements found in Scarlatti manuscript pieces. Avison sometimes made a faster piece into a slower one, and he generally shortened the free-form declamatory passages while keeping the more regular-meter sections a similar length. We are given a look inside Avison's compositional process by Concerto Koln because they include at the very end of the program a recording (on solo harpsichord) of the K 29 sonata that becomes the Con Furia second movement of Concerto 6. Listening repeatedly to both is a fascinating lesson in musical invention and imagination.

Six of the 12 concertos are here: Nos 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 11. I can only hope that Concerto Koln decides to record the rest. 13 strings (4+4+2+2+1) with a continuo group of harpsichord, lute, and bassoon supply the ideal texture and versatility for these concertos. Having celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2015, Concerto Koln continues to bring very fine, and sometimes quite unknown, baroque music to modern audiences. They play with warmth, sensitivity, and suave beauty while also knowing how to turn on breathtaking high-octane speed when the occasion warrants.
