Notes & Reviews:
One of the most valuable aspects of the Sony Classical Masters Series imprint is its restoration and re-issue of out of print recordings, and this 3 CD collection of British pianist Paul Crossley's comprehensive overview of Francis Poulenc's works for piano is a particularly notable confirmation of this cultural value. When it was originally released in 1990, Gramophone Magazine stated the collection contained "subtle and musicianly playing - as one would expect from Crossley that offers a somewhat unusual interpretation of Poulenc, the wistful element in his music deepened into a slightly self-conscious 'poetic' lyricism... " Now 25 years later, Crossley's Poulenc remains an essential destination in any survey of Poulenc's considerable body of work.
