Taj Mahal: Brothers/Music Fuh Ya' (Musica Para Tu)/Evolution (The Most Recent)

Album Notes

BGO's 2015 double-disc set pairs three late-'70s albums from Taj Mahal: Brothers and Music Fuh Ya' (Musica Para Tu), both from 1977, and 1978's Evolution (The Most Recent). These are three of Taj Mahal's slickest, liveliest, and oddest records, each grounded in a specific sound but stretching beyond it. Brothers is a funky soundtrack to a film that fictionalized the relationship of African-American activists Angela Davis and George Jackson. Music Fuh Ya' (Musica Para Tu) generally is based on a breezy Caribbean sound anchored on steel drums. Evolution builds off of that, tipping a hat to reggae but also threading some of the slick funk of Brothers into the mix. Although it's hard to call any of these three records either representative or successful, they nevertheless indicate Taj Mahal's adventurous spirit and how he can shift his sound to suit the times. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
