JazzTimes (6/03, p.138) - "...It is one of the important trio recordings of the new millennium to date..."
Personnel: John Taylor (piano); Marc Johnson (bass); Joey Baron (drums).
Recorded at Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway in April 2002.
It's hard to believe that the British jazz pianist John Taylor is actually self-taught, since his playing is so fluent and sophisticated and is matched by a fine pianistic touch reminiscent of Keith Jarrett and the early Chick Corea. Ultimately, however, Taylor is his own man and is much more concise than the fulsome Jarrett. The careful web of harmony that he spins on the title track of the haunting 2003 trio offering ROSSLYN is proof enough of that. Accompanying Taylor are Marc Johnson on bass and N.Y.C. "downtown" star Joey Baron on drums. Both provide ultra-sympathetic support on a set of complex, lyrical originals that grow in substance with each additional listen. The ECM production is characteristically spacious and detailed.
