Notes & Reviews:

Toccata Classics continues their overview of the Edinburgh composer Charles O'Brien (1882 - 1968) with Volume Two of his complete piano works featuring the young British pianist Warren Mailley-Smith. O'Brien's compositions reflected his heritage along with his Romantic era influences.

American Record Guide, May/June 2016
The two Rhapsodies, Op.22, are the major works on this program. They sound like an amalgam of Schumann and Brahms, and considering O'Brien's lifespan (1882-1968). Wagner represented a completely different aesthetic for O'Brien. Having taken lessons from Hamish MacCunn he was not immune to the innovations of the first part of the 20th Century. Both rhapsodies are strong pieces, beautifully crafted, and powerful of utterance. There is nothing of the drawingroom in these marvelous pieces.

The Four Waltzes of Op.26 are chromatic delights and are more extended than Brahms's essays in the form. The much later Grandchildren Waltzes were written for his grandchildren's ears. They are brief, pert episodes and seem quite enjoyable for adults as well. 'Arabesque' is a witty and creative delight, and 'Daffodils' is a lovely piece worthy of anyone's attention. The Barcarolle has a Fauré-like delicacy and a refined. The notes and sound are very good. The pianist has done yeoman service by introducing us to these impressive works.
