- Lori Sims (Piano)
Notes & Reviews:
Recorded in one take by noted pianist Lori Sims, the profoundly affecting Goldberg Variations reflects Sims' facile grasp of the profundity of this hallowed compostion along with her deep musical identification with Bach's intentions. Her liner notes demonstrate with wit and inclusiveness the cultural import of one of canonical pieces in classical repertory.
American Record Guide, March/April 2016
I have not ever heard a bad recording of the Goldberg Variations. This is one of the greatest works ever written and can stand on its own. Lori Sims, a professor Western Michigan University since 1997, was recorded in concert there on January 3, 2015. The TwoPianists label has consistently given us state-of-the-art sound and superb performances, and this release is no exception. Sims observes all repeats except in the Aria da capo. Her repeats are gracefully and effectively ornamented, as is historically appropriate. She uses great taste, and her ornaments always complement Bach's main musical message. For people familiar with this work, these create a continual interest and an element of discovery. Even though the ornaments sound spontaneous and improvisatory, they work so well that I am sure at least some of them are planned and worked out in advance. Sims employs a wide variety of touches, ranging from very smooth legato to sharp, almost harpsichord-like attacks. She allows her left hand to come to the fore often enough to catch my attention without ever overdoing it. If this nad been recorded in the studio with many chances to redo every minute detail (a la Glenn Gould), I doubt that a more satisfying rendition could be created. This issue's Goldberg Variations are certainly a varied lot (pun intended). All are well played.
