Musician (4/96, p.88) - "...some songs speak to a nearly ungovernable desire to be Keith Richards, other tracks suggest equally strong the wish to be Lowell George or Neil Young..."
BUFFALO NICKEL includes an unlisted bonus track, "Frozen Head State Park."
Personnel: Dan Baird (vocals, guitar, bass, cowbell); Brendan O'Brien (guitar, piano, organ, clavinette, bass, tambourine, shakers, background vocals); Keith Christopher (bass, drums); Terry Anderson (drums, background vocals); Mauro Magellan (drums); Joe South, Russ Fowler (background vocals).
Recorded at Southern Tracks, Atlanta, Georgia.
Singer/guitarist Baird delivers the rock and roll goods on BUFFALO NICKEL, his second solo album since departing his similarily no-frills band, the Georgia Satellites.
It's amazing how much satisfaction can be had from the intense bar-band-flavored rock that is Baird's forte. Brendan O'Brien's sonically shimmering production enhances BUFFALO NICKEL's steamy performances, yet spontaneity oozes from bluesy originals like "Hell To Pay." Romping covers of NRBQ's "I Want You Bad" and Deep Purple's (!) "Hush," which features background vocals by its creator, Joe South, blend seamlessly with Baird's lyrically folksy world view. Watch out, there's an unlisted, rambunctious, acoustic "Frozen Head State Park," which sounds as unrehearsed and unfettered as any campfire singalong ever could be. BUFFALO NICKEL's an album full of rocking joy.
