One of the few guitarists to come of age within the 1960s free-jazz scene, Sonny Sharrock was and remains an innovator. Sharrock was perhaps the first to apply the free concepts of saxophone icons Albert Ayler and John Coltrane to his instrument. ASK THE AGES (1991) may indeed be the definitive Sharrock album--it features Coltrane protégé Pharaoh Sanders on soprano and tenor saxophones and Coltrane alumnus Elvin Jones on drums. AGES consists of sweet, simple melodies flown into the ionosphere by the passionate, ecstatic soloing of Sharrock and Sanders, both of whom play with ferocious, and occasionally poetic, intensity.
