- Walter Saul (Piano)
Notes & Reviews:
The work Quiltings is based on the stunning fiber art of Ann Harwell, one of the South's 100 most renowned artists. These are truly paintings using quilting as their medium. The work is a tour through four galleries of fabric art.
American Record Guide, May/June 2016
Trained at Duke and Eastman, the composer pianist Walter Saul offers here a series of miniatures (most under two minutes) that respond to a series of 118 quilts by his sister in- law, Ann Har well. The music is fresh, unpretentious, and well-conceived for the piano. One of my favorite pieces, 'Looking Glass Falls', alternates brilliant splashes of extended triads with playful and sometimes simple lyric melody. 'Hibiscus', by contrast, employs a more post-tonal pitch content. Saul performs them beautifully. The microphones and/or post recording mastering makes the instrument sound metallic and occasionally electronic. A DVD pairing music with images of the quilts is available.
