Notes & Reviews:
A beautifully programmed collection anchored by the strength of Ragna Schirmer's piano. Clara and Robert Schumann borrow from each other's compositions in the early years of their great love affair in two sets of playfully intimate variations. Twenty years later, the theme is woven anew into two more sets of variations: a revisitation on the theme by Clara Schumann and one by her friend Johannes Brahms. Performing on an original Blušthner grand piano of 1856, Ragna Schirmer's long association with the music of both Clara and Robert deepens the sense of rediscovery of these rarely recorded works for the listener.

An interesting concept where "Clara and Robert Schumann quote from each other's compositions in the early years of their great love affair in two sets of variations". Two more sets find Clara and friend Johannes Brahms's expression of adulation for Robert. The recording also celebrates the 175th wedding anniversary of Clara and Robert. It is performed by this talented German pianist on an 1856 Bluthner. While the sound has elements of a fortepiano, it strikes a balance between that instrument and the modern piano. The notes are good, and the sound of the Bluthner piano is reproduced to perfection by the engineers. This is one of the most interesting recordings to come my way in a long time.
